What is Bowel Cancer

This section will inform you about the symptoms and signs of bowel cancer and precautions that you can take to try and prevent it.

It is a malignant tumour of the lower part of the bowel (sometimes called the colon, rectum and anal canal). When detected at an early stage, the disease will usually be cured, if left the cancer will spread making treatment more difficult. Therefore, early detection of the disease is important in order to save lives.

Every year 31,000 people develop bowel cancer in this country. It affects men and women in equal numbers and is Britain’s second most common cancer.

It is unusual before the age of forty becoming more common thereafter with increasing age.
